How Can CBD Help OCR Athletes?
First, let’s start with the basics. What is CBD?
CBD is what is known as a phytocannabinoid. “Phyto,” meaning from a plant and “cannabinoid,” meaning a chemical compound found in cannabis or the hemp plant. But did you know that your body also makes cannabinoids? These are called endocannabinoids and they are part of your body’s Endocannabinoid System (or ECS.)
CBD works with your body’s ECS to release neurotransmitter molecules that suppress the inflammation mechanisms and thereby reduce pain and allow the tissues to heal faster. Thanks to this process, you experience things like recovering more quickly from workouts, bouncing back from injury more effectively, and alleviating pain during training and competition.
A key aspect of OCR life is the training day, after day, after day, and racing multi-day events, both of which require your body to not only be fit, but also to be resilient.
And to maintain a resilient body there are 8 areas of life you must manage, nurture and prioritize. We call it the Endurance Octagon.
Effectively managing these areas is critical to thriving as an OCR athlete. When any one area gets too out of balance it has a negative effect on all the rest. So while we may manage them separately, they are all interrelated.
The Endurance Octagon shows that CBD can play a significant role in helping keep at least 6 areas in balance:
Mental Stress and Anxiety
Mental Stress and Anxiety
CBD has been shown to reduce anxiety by modulating the same systems in the brain as prescription anti-anxiety medications like Prozac and Xanax. If you get nervous leading up to a race, or can’t sleep the night before, CBD may help take that edge off.
CBD is known to be one of the best plant-based anti-inflammatory remedies. In a study published in the European Journal of Pain, CBD reduced joint pain, swelling, and inflammation by as much as 47%. When you can wake up the next day after a tough workout and feel ready to go again, that’s going to help you make fitness gains more quickly.
Unfortunately, injuries are a part of what we do. The good news is you don’t have to rely on OTC and narcotic pain relievers that come with an incredible amount of negative side effects, including addition. Since being approved by the World Anti-Doping Agency, athletes around the world are now using CBD where in the past their injury treatments often relied on dangerous and addictive painkillers.
Sleep is critical to an athlete’s success. Because sleep is when your body goes to work repairing itself at a cellular level, it’s as important as the work you put in. CBD can help regulate your body’s ability to naturally unwind and fall asleep by reducing anxiety and promoting a feeling of calmness.
CBD plays a big role in regulating & stabilizing the immune system which enhances your body’s ability to quickly and efficiently recover from physical exertion. When your body isn’t working as hard to recover, it’s able to focus its energy on other areas, like warding off viruses and bugs that love to creep in when your defenses are down.
CBD has been shown to effectively relieve pain in both muscles and joints by working with your body’s endocannabinoid system to reduce inflammation. As a plant-based pain relief solution, CBD does not carry any of the side effects that OTC or narcotic pain relievers do.
No, CBD isn’t magic. And by the way, it also isn’t psychoactive (ie: it won’t get you ‘high.”)
But it is an important tool for OCR athletes to have in their toolkit to help maximize your training and ensure that you show up to the start line in September fit, healthy and ready to rumble.
